Newcastle United news: Robinson issues emphatic verdict as Callum Wilson controversy analysed
Paul Robinson has claimed VAR official Jarred Gillett was right not to award Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson a penalty at Man United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said "there was not enough evidence to overturn the original decision on the field" from the replays.
As shown on Sky Sports (16 October), Wilson went to ground under challenge from Raphael Varane in the first half of the Magpies' goalless draw with the Red Devils.
Referee Craig Pawson waved played on despite protests from Eddie Howe's side.
VAR official Jarred Gillett did not deem a clear and obvious error to have been made.
Varane's challenge on Wilson was one of many contentious refereeing decisions during the 90 minutes at Old Trafford.
When asked by Football Insider if Newcastle should have been awarded a penalty in the first half, Robinson said: "No, they shouldn't.
"It was a difficult one, don't get me wrong, but I do not think it was a clear cut penalty. There was not enough evidence to overturn the decision on the field. That is why VAR did not intervene. It was not a clear and obvious error. Varane has stepped across him but is there enough contact? I think we have seen referees being more lenient this season and this is an example of that."
The Magpies are currently sixth in the Premier League table.
They welcome Everton to St. James' Park on Wednesday (19 October).
