Paul Robinson has heaped praise on Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser for "stepping up" in the absence of Allan Saint-Maximin.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 28-year-old was "brilliant" at Brentford on Saturday.

Fraser started on the left wing in the absence of the injured Saint-Maximin at the Brentford Community Stadium.

The Scotland international contributed one assist, seven key passes and six accurate crosses in a 2-0 win for the visitors. [WhoScored]

Speaking on BBC's Match of the Day (26 February), Fraser revealed that he shares an "unbelievable" relationship with Eddie Howe.

When asked by Football Insider's Dylan Childs for his assessment of Fraser's performance, Robinson said:

"It was always going to be tough for Ryan Fraser given his previous relationship with Eddie Howe and the way in which he left Bournemouth.

"We know he refused to finish that season with them and that would have fractured his relationship with Howe. It was always going to be interesting to see how it went between them at Newcastle.

"But credit to them, they have obviously wiped the slate clean.

"Fraser is playing to the level that got him the move to Newcastle in the first place.

"He was brilliant against Brentford on that left-hand side. With Saint-Maximin being injured he has stepped up and picked up the baton. Howe will be over the moon."
