Paul Robinson has backed Newcastle United striker Chris Wood to return to Leeds United in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 31-year-old would be "the perfect solution" for Jesse Marsch's side.

Wood has struggled for game time at St. James' Park this season.

Sources have told Football Insider (3 December) that Leeds are weighing up a January move for the New Zealand international.

The centre-forward has 18 months remaining on his contract on Tyneside.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Wood's future, Robinson said: "Wood was the first generation of the new Newcastle if you like. As a club, they are now going to move on.

"I said this from day one when Newcastle got taken over. They had to sign players for the situation they were in and at the time, Chris Wood was a solution for what they needed.

"They have now moved on and are targeting a different calibre of player. Look at where they are in the league, they need players who will allow they to maintain their push for the top six.

"Wood has done his job and maybe he has served his time. Perhaps it is time for him to move on. I like him. He has great attributes. He will score goals for somebody else in the Premier League.

"Listen, I would love to see him back at Leeds United. They need a striker. It would be the perfect solution for them."
