Paul Robinson has claimed Newcastle United should think twice before signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one suggested the Magpies should be signing a more defensive midfielder than the 22-year-old.

Gallagher was the subject of interest from Everton and Newcastle at the end of the January transfer window.

It is understood that Chelsea would have sold Gallagher to Newcastle in January if Enzo Fernandez had been signed earlier.

When asked by Football Insider if Gallagher would be a welcome addition at St. James' Park, Robinson said: "Newcastle have to be careful of stockpiling players.

"The question they need to continually ask is, 'Will this player improve our starting XI?' They do not want to spend £40million on a player who is going to be sitting on the bench. We all know about Financial Fair Play. It is important that clubs spend their money wisely, as Newcastle have done so far.

"Does Gallagher improve their starting XI? I'm not sure. They already have a few attacking wide players and midfielders.

"If there is outgoings, a move for Gallagher would make sense in the summer. But, looking at their current squad I think they would be better off investing money elsewhere. Probably in a defensive midfielder rather than an attacking one seeing as they've lost Jonjo Shelvey."
