Mark Gillespie will leave Newcastle United this summer when his contract expires, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the Magpies will not offer the shot-stopper a new contract and he will leave as a free agent in June after four seasons on Tyneside.

Gillespie, 32, has been a back-up at the club since his free move from Scottish outfit Motherwell in the summer of 2020.

Eddie Howe's side are eager to clear out many of the under-utilised members of the squad and make space for new signings this summer.

Mark Gillespie to end Newcastle United career after four seasons

The club triggered the option to extend Gillespie's contract for a further year last summer.

However, Newcastle are in the market to recruit a new back-up goalkeeper, with sources telling Football Insider (13 March) that they are planning to sign a number-two to first-choice Nick Pope.

Gillespie has not made a single appearance for Newcastle since his first year at the club - three games in the League Cup in 2020-21.

This season, he has made the bench on 12 occasions in all competitions but is firmly fourth-choice behind Martin Dubravka, who has stepped up in Pope's absence, and Karius.

Newcastle sit eighth in the Premier League table after their 1-0 win at Craven Cottage against Fulham on Saturday (6 April).

They are back in action at St James' Park this weekend (13 April) against Tottenham.
