Paul Pogba cited as Aston Villa make move to sign 'superstar' in January

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie has urged Aston Villa to "be careful" with the players they bring in to the dressing room.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said Villa need to sign players that can work with the team, rather than individual "superstars".

Emery worked with the forward during his time in charge of Villareal and has been on his radar since he took over at Villa Park.

When asked if Emery should be wary about bringing in players that do not fit into the team, McAvennie told Football Insider: "I do not think Emery would do that.

"He has worked with a lot of players so he will know who fits into his team. I think that was out the game for a bit at Villa and they were just bringing in superstars. I think that is finished now.

"That dressing room needs to be happy. We saw what happened with Paul Pogba at Man United, what a talent but he did not like who he played with.

"I think now they have got to be careful with who they bring in to the dressing room. I think that is a big important part of that now. Aston Villa have got enough individuals, they need somebody who will work with the team."
