Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers manager Philippe Clement will not be sacked following his side’s crushing League Cup final defeat to Celtic.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed he hasn’t heard any fans calling for the Belgian’s head.

Rangers were beaten 5-4 on penalties by Celtic after the League Cup final ended 3-3 following extra time at Hampden Park.

There has been speculation surrounding Clement’s position at Ibrox after the disappointing start to the Scottish Premiership season, with his side currently sitting 11 points behind Celtic in third place.

But the Glasgow giants are well-placed to quality for the Europa League knockout rounds after claiming 11 points from their opening six matches.

Rangers to stick with Philippe Clement after Celtic defeat

Wyness believes Clement will remain in charge for now at Rangers after his side put in a creditable performance against Celtic.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think it’s very far from the final nail in the coffin for Clement.

“I thought he did really well, taking them to penalties.

“I think it could have gone either way and Rangers performed better than expected.

“From what I’m hearing and seeing, Clement was not the object of derision or calling for his head.

“I think he actually put in a creditable performance for Rangers.

“I never expected them to get that close to even extra time.

“I don’t think Clement has done himself too much harm.

“Obviously, everybody hates to lose to Celtic in that Old Firm derby, but I think he might survive to fight another day.”
