Mauricio Pochettino has revealed how Cameron Carter-Vickers is too strong for him to handle in training ground matches.

The Tottenham manager paid tribute the height and strength of the imposing defender, 19, as he explained how his Spurs team are no longer a soft touch.

Generations of Tottenham teams have been derided for being pretty but fragile and Argentine Pochettino has moved away from that by drilling into his players the ned to play at a furious intensity.

He is also moulding them in his own tough image.

“I like to fight with the players in training to show them that I am stronger than them – mentally and physically,” Pochettino said, as quoted by the Guardian. “Sometimes, I lose the physical challenge because they are physically stronger but I am stronger in here [he points to his temples].

“I did it again today. I challenged with Cameron and my hand was … [he shakes it in pain]. It happened again. Cameron crushed everyone in the box.”

The strapping Carter-Vickers has been regularly hailed as a defensive star of the future by Pochettino since graduating from the club's academy.

The centre-back has made only four first-team appearances to date but has been a regular member of the matchday squad this season.

Tottenham are preparing for their Premier League trip to Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday, which is a 3pm kick-off.

Pochettino's side need to overcome Burnley, who have a fine record at home, to keep their slim title hopes alive.
