Portsmouth have opened talks to sign Sheffield United striker Ched Evans, Football Insider can reveal.

The League One club have set their sights on landing the Wales international, 30, as they look to boost their attack ahead of next season.

A Portsmouth source has told Football Insider the club are hopeful of beating rival clubs, including Oxford United, in the race for Evans' signature.

Pompey are keen to sign Evans on a permanent deal and are hopeful of securing him for a cut-price fee given his age and the fact he is out of contract at the Blades in 12 months' time.

The 13-times international spent last season on loan at Fleetwood Town in League One and had an impressive campaign, scoring 17 league goals among 18 strikes from 41 appearances in all competitions.

Evans is seeking at least a two-year contract to turn his back on Chris Wilder's team, who were promoted to the Premier League after finishing second in last season's Championship.

The forward is coming to the end of his second spell at Bramall Lane and has a proven track record in both the second and third tiers of English football.
