Premier League clubs to force PFA to take action over Alexander Isak to Liverpool

Premier League clubs will look to put more pressure on The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) following the saga surrounding Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, sources have told Football Insider. 

Isak joined Liverpool in a £125million deal on deadline day (1 September) following weeks of intense speculation surrounding his future. 

The Sweden international refused to play for Newcastle United after initially seeing his move to Anfield blocked. 

Isak released a shock statement about his Newcastle situation last month, insisting promises had been “broken” by the club and they had “lost” his trust. 

Sources say Premier League sides will now look for the PFA – the trade union for professional footballers in England – to become more actively involved in matters of this nature and insist on players fulfilling their contracts moving forward.

Isak isn’t the only Premier League star who refused to play after Yoane Wissa also went on strike at Brentford.

However, unlike Isak, Wissa insisted he had it “in writing” the Bees had informed him he could leave the club if a “reasonable offer” was tabled for his services.

Wissa completed a move to Newcastle on deadline day, with the deal believed to be worth around £55million. 

Elsewhere, Marc Guehi saw his move to Liverpool collapse on the final day of the window.

Crystal Palace had agreed to sell their captain to the Reds in a £35million deal, but it fell through after Oliver Glasner’s side failed to sign a replacement. 

Guehi has since been praised for his conduct after continuing to play for Palace throughout the summer despite Liverpool’s interest.

Liverpool were the biggest spenders across the summer transfer window after making several new additions. 

Arne Slot’s side spent £446million after signing Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman. 

The Premier League champions sit top of the table after claiming maximum points from their opening three games of the new season. 

The Reds will be back in action against Burnley on 14 September following the upcoming international break.
