Preston North End have set their sights on signing former Burnley midfielder Jack Cork on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 35-year-old is currently without a club after the expiration of his contract at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Cork had been with the Clarets full-time since 2017 but had spent a year and a half on loan at the club from 2010 to 2011.

During his time at Burnley, the defensive midfielder racked up 267 appearances, won the Championship, and helped the club qualify for the Europa League.

Ultimately, his final season with the Clarets ended in disappointment, as Burnley were relegated from the Premier League.

The 35-year-old only featured four times as a bit-part player during the 2023-24 campaign, with only 27 minutes of game time.

Preston could make a move for Cork

If Preston were able to secure Cork’s signature this summer, they would gain an extremely experienced midfielder who has made 594 appearances throughout his career.

With 304 in the Premier League and 222 in the Championship, Cork knows how to play at the highest level of English football.

His knowledge and experience of getting out of the Championship could also help Preston make the step up they need after missing out on the play-offs by just 10 points last season.

Meanwhile, Burnley are still without a manager following Vincent Kompany’s departure to Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

However, Football Insider revealed that former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is one of multiple candidates who have been interviewed for the vacant position, with Scott Parker believed to be an increasingly strong contender.
