Preston North End are in advanced talks to sign midfielder Josh Onomah on a free transfer after his Fulham exit, sources have told Football Insider.

Onomah, 25, is a free agent after mutually agreeing to cancel his contract at Craven Cottage on Monday, as first revealed by Football Insider.

The former Tottenham man was in the final six months of his contract at Fulham and both parties agreed to cancel it early.

A number of Championship clubs have shown an interest in the midfielder, who was also on Rangers' radar going into the window.

Preston are increasingly confident of sealing a move for Onomah before the transfer deadline.

Onomah has made just two appearances for Fulham since their return to the Premier League, with Marco Silva preferring Palhinha and Harrison Reed in Fulham’s usual two midfield roles.

He was on the verge of signing for West Brom on deadline day in the summer but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour.

He played 22 times last season for the Cottagers, including eight Championship starts as the West Londoners secured automatic promotion.

Onomah could become Preston's third edition of the winter window after the signings of centre-forward pair Liam Delap and Thomas Cannon on loan from Man City and Everton respectively.

Strikers ean Maguire and Mikey O'Neill meanwhile have left the club on loan, while midfielder Adam O'Reilly has joined Derry City on a permanent deal.

The Lancashire side, who are 11th in the Championship table, face Bristol City next Saturday (4 February).
