Pundit: Everton player is 'unbelievable' and 'better than Ronaldo'

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Andros Townsend's move to Everton has so far proved to be the signing of the summer.

That's according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the attacker's form.

Townsend, 30, has scored five goals in nine total outings since joining Everton on a free in the summer.

He also has three assists in those games, meaning he is almost averaging one goal involvement per 90 minutes.

Townsend's latest strike came in Saturday's hard-fought 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

McAvennie claims the Everton winger's move was the deal of the summer, topping that of his opponent on Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo.

"He's been unbelievable," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"One of the best players so far this season, the stats don't lie. The signing of the summer so far, better than the likes of Ronaldo or Lukaku.

"It speaks volumes about confidence. We never saw him do this at Palace.

"I remember him having a decent spell at Newcastle but I don't think he was ever this good.

"The key is keeping it going all season. If he does keep this form up he will be one of the players of the season, no doubt."

Townsend imitated Ronaldo's iconic celebration when he scored in front of the Everton fans at Old Trafford last weekend.

Everton remain fifth in the table and face fellow high-flyers West Ham after the international break.
