Pundit in 'no doubt' about new Harvey Elliott role after what he's just seen at Liverpool - 'he's the one'
Noel Whelan has backed Harvey Elliott for an England call-up in early 2023 after impressing in the heart of the Liverpool midfield this term.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 19-year-old has been "the bright light in a very glum season" for Jurgen Klopp's side.
Elliott marked his 10th Premier League start of the season with a sumptuous assist for Darwin Nunez as Liverpool defeated Southampton 3-1 at Anfield on Saturday (12 November).
The former Fulham starlet has made three appearances for England's Under-21 side but will be in contention for a call-up when the senior side start their Euro 2024 qualification campaign in March 2023.
Elliott has notched three goals and one assist in 22 outings for Liverpool this season - 14 have which have been as part of the starting lineup.
The midfielder made 11 appearances for the Reds last term - his breakthrough campaign at Anfield.
Whelan hailed Elliott for "taking responsibility" in a dismal season so far for Liverpool.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I’d be very surprised if he’s not called up after the World Cup.
“I think Gareth Southgate will recognise the talent Elliott has – we all do, whether we’re Liverpool fans or not.
“I’ve got admiration for such a talented player at such a young age.
“He takes responsibility, and he’s been the bright light in a very glum season for Liverpool so far.
“When they’re playing badly, he’s the one taking the bull by the horns.
“He’s got a great future in front of him, but also a very long international career ahead.
“I just think right now, for the World Cup, they needed a bit more experience.
“But there’s no doubt, there’ll be lots of England caps, World Cups and European Championships on the way for him.”
