Paul Robinson has claimed West Ham will face competition for Jesse Lingard's signature amid discussions over a January move.

The former Spurs keeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old's lack of minutes at Manchester United will hamper his chances of making England's World Cup squad.

Football Insider today (September 9th) revealed West Ham remain in talks with Lingard's camp about signing him.

The BBC reported on Tuesday (September 7th) that Lingard has rejected a new contract at Man United, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.

Robinson called Lingard's contract situation "inevitable" after his struggle for minutes at Old Trafford.

“It's inevitable with his lack of game time," he told Football Insider's Dylan Childs.

“Dan James has left which is probably what prevented Lingard from leaving, with the money involved in that deal.

“He’s not signing a new deal and you can’t blame him – he’s played four minutes this season.

“He’s not going to be short of clubs willing to take him, he looked like a different player at West Ham last season.

“In an England shirt, he’s playing with a smile. As soon as he leaves Old Trafford, he seems to look happy and play well.

“I think it’s a deal which will be revisited in January and get done. If he keeps taking his opportunities, there’ll be more teams than West Ham interested.

“This lack of games at United will just hamper him in terms of England’s World Cup next season – he will want to be part of that.”

Lingard netted nine goals and registered five assists during his successful loan at West Ham last term.

The Hammers plumped for Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow after failing to sign the England international permanently.
