Paul Robinson is "so surprised" Frank Lampard is not on the final managerial shortlist for the Rangers job.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League goalkeeper claimed his former England teammate would be "a great appointment" at Ibrox.

According to Sky Sports on Monday, Lampard, 43, is not on the Gers' three-man shortlist to replace Steven Gerrard.

The list does however, include bookmakers favourite Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The ex-Rangers defender held "positive talks" with the club's board last week.

Rangers are said to be very happy with the candidates still in the frame for the job.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the news, Robinson said: "I'm so surprised Frank Lampard is not being heavily backed for the job.

"He had talks with Norwich and pulled himself out. Surely everything points to Rangers.

"The job Lampard did at Chelsea was a decent one. I think people forget that.

"He is a good manager who can develop young players in the same way Steven has done. I'm sure Frank could go in and do a job.

"I'm surprised he is not one of the favourites to take the job. I think he'd be a great appointment for them."

Lampard has been out of work since his departure from Chelsea at the end of January this year.

He won 44 of his 84 games in charge of the Blues.
