Rangers board 'promised Philippe Clement money to overturn Celtic' - pundit

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement would leave Ibrox Stadium with his reputation “intact” if he were to quit the club this summer.

That’s the opinion of former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Clement’s future.

Clement has been open about the fact that every Rangers player is available for the right price this summer, highlighting the club’s financial issues.

With major financial issues coupled with the fact that the club won’t be able to play at Ibrox at the start of the season, Clement is dealing with several problems.

Rangers gave Philippe Clement false promises

The lack of money available has stopped the 50-year-old from being able to strengthen his team ahead of the new campaign.

He has been dealt another blow by Todd Cantwell requesting to leave the club, adding to his frustration before the season begins.

“If he goes this season his reputation is still intact,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s nobody going to say anything because everyone knows the way Rangers is being run.

“He was not promised that.

“I’ll guarantee you he was promised money to come in and overturn Celtic; that was his promise, I would believe.

“There’s no manager that’s going to come in there and not get money to challenge.

“Clement came in thinking he was going to get money to spend, and that’s a breach of contract as far as I’m concerned, so if he walks, he walks.

“He’s a very brave guy, he’s got feelings as happened the last time he stormed out and then he came and apologised after when he got beat.

“But I think he’s a brave guy; I don’t know if he’ll walk or not.

“He’s definitely going to wait until the window shuts anyway and say, ‘Am I getting anyone?’”
