Rangers have been backed to re-sign Nathan Patterson in the January transfer window to enhance their defensive options.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that the 23-year-old returning to Ibrox would be a “good move for the player and for Rangers.”

Patterson moved from Rangers to Everton in 2022, but he has struggled to nail down the right-back position, having only made four appearances this season in all competitions.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Philippe Clement is looking to sign defensive reinforcements this January, and bringing someone back who knows the club would be beneficial.

Rangers signing Nathan Patterson would be best for all parties

“Tavernier’s back in the team, playing well again,” Robinson said to Football Insider.

“What did Nathan Patterson sign for Everton in 2022? He's not really getting [in], he doesn't play regularly, does he, in Sean Dyche’s team?

“So, a loan move, you’re thinking a loan move in January for him? Potentially.

“That's the market that Rangers are looking at, financially [their], hands are tied and it's just a situation that they find themselves in.

“[His] contract expires in 2027 at Everton, if the manager would let him go it'd be a good move for the player and for Rangers as well in all honesty.

“It'd be an option where Everton would probably take the majority of his wages and they get some reinforcements, and he can play higher up the pitch as well as a wingback or a right midfielder.”
