Chris Hughton is in advanced talks to become the new Bristol City manager after Rangers boss Steven Gerrard knocked them back, Football Insider can reveal.

The Championship outfit are close to ending their search for a new manager to replace Lee Johnson.

An industry source has told Football Insider that Hughton is in negotiations to be appointed the new City manager and they are close to being finalised.

This comes after the club's billionaire City owner Steve Lansdown tried to lure Gerrard from Glasgow to spearhead his side's promotion pursuit next season.

As reported by Football Insider earlier this week, the Liverpool icon was offered a deal that would make him the highest-paid manager in the Championship next season.

It topped his £2.5million-a-year-plus Ibrox agreement in a stunning show of ambition from Bristol City.

But they have become the second English second-tier club this summer to be rejected by Gerrard after Birmingham City.

The 40-year-old has made it clear he is all set on his third season at Rangers and ending Celtic's march to a historic 10th consecutive title.

Hughton, 61, is now in contention to continue his impressive managerial career at Ashton Gate.

The former Brighton, Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United manager has been out of work since his dismissal by the Seagulls at the end of last season.
