Rangers expert issues Connor Goldson claim as flashpoint re-analysed - 'he doesn't know it's coming'
Alan Hutton has hailed referee Steven McLean for using "common sense" to not award a penalty against Rangers on Sunday (8 January).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender urged all officials to take a similar approach.
Connor Goldson was the subject of another handball claim as the Bears faced Dundee United at the weekend.
As seen in footage emerging on Twitter, the ball hit Goldson's arm in the box after a United corner travelled through a host of bodies before connecting with the defender's arm.
The Light Blues defender didn't know much about the incident and McLean didn't penalise the centre-back.
Much like in the game against Celtic, the VAR official did not instruct the on-field referee to review the incident.
When asked if the weekend's decision was less dubious than the offence against their Old Firm rivals, Hutton told Football Insider: "I think so.
"He does not really know it is coming. It is coming from a corner, he does not really know where the ball is and he is looking for his player.
"It does come down and hit his arm, there is no getting away from that. I think a little bit of common sense needs to be used and I think that is what referees are trying to do.
"He is not intentionally trying to hand ball it. I think it was the right decision but I do understand where a lot of the problems are coming up.
"It is difficult to try and make sure you get it correct. But I think common sense saw that this was not a penalty."
