Rangers are in talks to sign out-of-contract Crystal Palace defender Adrian Mariappa.

Pictures emerged on social media site Twitter on Saturday of Ibrox assistant manager David Weir and chief scout Frank McParland speaking to the player and his agent.

The pictures of the quartet at a hotel sparked a near-meltdown on social media when they were tweeted as speculation grew over who Weir and McParland were meeting with. It was later confirmed to have been the Jamaica international.

Mariappa, 29, was a key player for Watford and Reading before moving to Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee in 2013.

But the versatile defender, who can play at centre back and right back, has found first team appearances limited at Selhurst Park.

Mariappa made just three appearances for Palace in 2015-16, and came on as a 94th minute substitute in the FA Cup Final against Man United.

An experienced international, Mariappa has 37 caps for his country, and captained Jamaica in all three of their recent Copa America fixtures, which ended with elimination at the group stage.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has made five signings this summer, snapping up midfielders Joey Barton, Jordan Rossiter, Josh Windass and Matt Crooks, as well as defender Clint Hill.
