Rangers struggle to offload 24-yr-old due to salary agreed by Allen
Rangers face a struggle to sell Brandon Barker permanently this summer as he is on a relatively "huge" salary, Football Insider can reveal.
The winger sealed a deadline-day loan move to English League One club Oxford United after struggling to make an impression at Ibrox.
Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Rangers hope Barker, 24, can use the "shop window" of the EFL to reignite his career and attract suitors in the second half of the season.
But the Light Blues recognise the difficulty of a permanent summer sale due to Barker's lucrative contract.
He was enticed from Man City in the summer of 2019 by ex-Rangers recruitment chief Mark Allen and handed a three-year deal said to be "huge" for a player unproven in senior football.
Allen knew Barker very well from his time in charge of City's academy and hoped he could replicate his performances in youth-team football.
The wide man was capped by England at Under-20 level and was renowned for regularly destroying full-backs at age-group level.
But Barker has failed to make a serious impact during his two seasons in Glasgow.
He has scored three goals in 26 matches for Rangers, including two in 13 games this season, but struggled to reproduce his impressive efforts in training in competitive matches.
Barker was one of four senior loan departures from Ibrox during the recent transfer window.
Jordan Jones, George Edmundson and Glenn Middleton also headed out of the club for the second half of the campaign.
