Newly promoted Rangers are set to swoop in and sign Costa Rican international Esteban Alvarado from Trabzonspor, according to a report.

The goalkeeper is renowned for being a hothead, after he came to blows with a streaking fan in December 2011.

However, the Scottish Sun claim Rangers are keeping close tabs on the experienced shot-stopper and preliminary talks are underway.

Alvarado, 27, is currently the first choice keeper for Trabzonspar and has played 16 games for the Turkish club this season.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton has spread his net wide as he looks to take the newly promoted club to more domestic success next year in the Scottish Premiership.

Alvarado is not the first keeper to be link with the Glasgow clubs, with Hamilton and Northern Ireland's Euro 2016 keeper Michael McGovern and Southend's David Bentley also linked.

However it is said that Costa Rican Alvardao is now Warburton's primary target to support current number one Wes Foderingham.

Despite being the Trabzonspor first choice, they are looking to offload him just a year after he joined from AZ Alkmaar in a ploy to save money.

The reputation of Alvarado as a hothead comes from a Dutch Cup match in December 2011, when the keeper was sent off after landing two kicks on an Ajax thug, who had tried to attack him on the pitch.

Firsly, Alvarado launched a kung-fu kick at the yob that was trying to attack him, and that was followed by a second kick with the hooligan on the floor.

The AZ players immediately left the field in protest and the game was abandoned, before the Dutch FA rescinded the red card due to an appeal from AZ.

The following year Alvarado was named in the Dutch team of the year, and expressed a desire to play in Britain.

In other Rangers news, they have lined up a third Premier League signing this week.
