Eric Dier was only fit enough to make the Tottenham bench for their clash against Liverpool on Sunday due to illness, according to a reliable journalist.

ESPN and Yahoo Sport journalist Ben Pearce claimed on his personal Twitter account that Dier, 23, was likely to have picked up the same issue that has seen Ben Davies ruled out of Spurs' last few fixtures, with the Welshman himself only fit to make the bench against Jurgen Klopp' side.

Dier has been in good form for Spurs this season, playing an important, yet perhaps under-rated, role in the defensive midfield position, as well as filling in at centre-backs at times.

The England international was in the backline on Wednesday in the 1-1 draw at Real Madrid and made a good account of himself, and it will no doubt be a blow for Tottenham if he is to spend an extended spell on the sidelines with his illness.

The ex-Sporting CP enforcer has made 12 appearances across all competitions this term, starting every Premier League game before Sunday's clash at Wembley.

Tottenham haven't won in their last 10 meetings with Liverpool, losing seven of those games.

It will no doubt be a run that Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to end this weekend though.
