Wolves have made an audacious attempt to sign Atalanta striker Mauricio Pinilla, according to a report.

Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed on his website that the Championship club are trying to land the Chile international before next Wednesday's transfer cut-off.

It is said that the player, who is also being targeted by clubs in Brazil and Argentina, is keen to leave the Serie A club.

Pinilla has one year remaining on his contract at Atalanta, who he joined from Genoa last year.

He has a fine pedigree in Serie A, scoring 48 goals and supplying 17 assists in 165 matches in the Italian top flight.

Pinilla has also scored seven goals in 43 appearances for Chile and was a member of the squad that won the 2015 Copa America.

Under new ownership by the Chinese investment group Fosun and a new manager in Walter Zenga, Wolves have made an impressive unbeaten start to the Championship season to reach third position behind Huddersfield and Brighton.

Zenga has now completed seven signings in the summer transfer window, as he added Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Ola John earlier this week to the likes of Joao Teixeira, Silvio, Helder Costa, Prince Oniangue and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
