Celtic are planning a sensational move for David Moyes as they make him their number one managerial target, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hoops have turned their attention to an ambitious attempt to lure the Scot, 60, despite West Ham's European triumph on Wednesday night.

Celtic chiefs have drawn up a shortlist of candidates who can carry on Ange Postecoglou's hugely impressive work following his departure to Tottenham this week.

They include Man City assistant manager Enzo Maresca - as first revealed by Football Insider - as well as their former manager Brendan Rodgers.

But it is now believed that Moyes is the man the Celtic board most want to replace Postecoglou.

The club want a manager who can not include continue their domestic dominance, but also make a big impression in Europe, something that proved beyond Postecoglou as well as Rodgers.

Moyes further enhanced his credentials by overseeing West Ham's first trophy in 43 years and, for good measure, he is a lifelong Celtic fan who has always been keen to manage the club.

It is also far from certain that the Scot will remain at the London Stadium next season.

Football Insider revealed on 20 May that Moyes had planned for the Fiorentina match being his West Ham swansong.

That counted as a major surprise given the team's finale to the season, which included avoiding relegation with relative comfort.

He is believed to want to leave the club on his own terms and return to his family home in Lancashire.

Another major factor in his thinking is that he has lost two key allies at West Ham in recent seasons, trusted assistants Alan Irvine and Stuart Pearce.

Moyes has been in charge of the Hammers for nearly four years after his appointment as manager for a second spell that began in December 2019.
