Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been left seething after Victor Wanyama snubbed a last-gasp transfer to Club Brugges, Football Insider understands.

The Spurs chief spent weeks negotiating the permanent exit of the central midfielder, 28, after he had slipped down the pecking order in Mauricio Pochettino's side.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that Levy reached an agreement last week with Brugges over the fee for Wanyama after accepting a bid of £9million rising to a potential £12million and granted him permission to head to Belgium to finalise the deal.

The Kenya international was also offered a lucrative four-year contract that would have run for two more years than his Spurs deal even though it meant taking a pay cut on his £65,000-a-week current salary.

Levy and the Spurs board were told last week that Wanyama was ready to move to Bruges to reignite a career that has been ravaged by injury over the past two years.

But the former Southampton player changed his mind after holding talks and it means that Tottenham will miss out on a major transfer fee for someone who's only on the fringes of the first team.

Wanyama was on the bench for the opening-day win over Aston Villa but has failed to make the matchday squad for the three subsequent league games while he negotiated his exit.

The midfield anchorman may now be re-integrated into the Spurs squad but faces a major battle to play with Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko the first choices, and with Eric Dier also able to play in his position.
