West Ham will not rival Sheffield United for the signature of Nottingham Forest star Matty Cash until they offload some senior stars, Football Insider understands.

The Hammers were keen on the right-back, 23, in January and have maintained an interest in him in this window.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider the club are keeping tabs on Cash's situation but are holding fire on a formal move.

The Londoners are in the market for a new right-back this window following the departures of Pablo Zabaleta and Jeremy Ngakia.

Sheffield United have already had a £10million bid for Cash knocked back by Forest but are expected to return to the negotiating table with an improved offer.

That kind of fee is currently out of the price range of the cash-conscious Hammers, who need to sell to buy this summer despite escaping Premier League relegation.

Manager David Moyes is keen to sell some big earners, with the possibility of Felipe Anderson leaving accelerating after Football Insider revealed he has jetted out to Italy for transfer talks.

West Ham made enquiries about Cash in January, when they suggested a potential £12m deal.

But Forest refused to let their academy product go while they tried to secure promotion to the Premier League.

Cash has played 141 times for the Championship big guns, including 40 league starts in the 2019-20 campaign.
