Aberdeen captain Graeme Shinnie is set to spurn interest from Rangers for a move south of the border this summer, Football Insider understands.

The 27-year-old left-back has been targeted by the Glasgow giants ahead of the window as he is out of contract at the Dons in June and does not want to sign an extension.

A source close to the player has told Football Insider that Shinnie is attracted by the possibility of moving to Ibrox but has made up his mind that his next club will be in England.

A string of Championship clubs south of the border are interested in signing the versatile Aberdeen mainstay, who has played in central midfield for much of this season.

Shinnie was strongly linked with Wigan Athletic in the January window but the source revealed they are not currently among the frontrunners and talk of a done deal was wide of the mark.

Dons manager Derek McInnes had been desperate to keep him, claiming Shinnie wouldn’t enjoy the status he has at Pittodrie anywhere else.

The Scotland international has made 182 appearances for Aberdeen since signing from Inverness in the summer of 2015.
