There are currently four names in the running to replace Russell Martin at Rangers, sources have told Football Insider.

Martin was sacked by the Glasgow giants on Sunday (5 October) evening, after an awful start to the season.

The Gers have won just one of their first seven games in the Scottish Premiership, and are already 11 points adrift of table-topping Hearts.

Rangers' 1-1 draw with Falkirk was the last straw for the board, who finally pulled the trigger and ended Martin's disastrous reign.

Rangers' four-man shortlist to replace Russell Martin

Sources say that Steven Gerrard, Danny Rohl, Sean Dyche, and Kevin Muscat are all in contention to be appointed at Ibrox.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (6 October) morning that Gerrard would jump at the opportunity to rejoin Rangers, after leaving the Glasgow giants back in 2021.

Rohl and Dyche were both names under consideration among the Ibrox hierarchy over the summer, before they eventually opted for Martin.

As for Muscat, the 52-year-old had a spell with the Gers as a player back in 2002, and as a manager, he has won league titles in Australia, Japan, and China.

Fifth name in the mix to become Rangers manager

Mark van Bommel is another linked with the Rangers job, after having talks with the club earlier this year.

Speaking to talkSPORT last month, Van Bommel confirmed there had been discussions around him taking the job at Ibrox before Martin's appointment during the summer.

He said: “Yeah, there were some talks [to become the manager], but not directly to the board of Rangers.”

The Dutchman has had spells in charge of PSV and Wolfsburg, as well as a successful two-year stint at Royal Antwerp.

Now, Van Bommel is reportedly interested in the Rangers job again, with Ibrox chiefs still in the process of shortlisting names.
