Robinson: 'Phenomenal' Heaton should reject West Brom and sign for Leeds this summer
Paul Robinson has heaped praise on 'phenomenal' Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton as he is linked with with a move to West Brom.
However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England number one said the 35-year-old is "far too good to play in the Championship" next season.
The Athletic claim Heaton is considering leaving Villa Park in the summer, with his contract set to expire at the end of June.
The same publication also named the England international as a potential replacement for Sam Johnstone at The Hawthorns this summer, with the 28-year-old set to leave Albion if they suffer relegation.
Sam Allardyce's side are currently 19th in the Premier League and nine points from safety with seven games remaining.
Robinson, who played with Heaton at Burnley, suggested his former teammate could move to Leeds United or Southampton.
"Tom is a Premier League goalkeeper," he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
"He is far too good to play in the Championship. He is a number one Premier League goalkeeper. Whether that be at Leeds United, Southampton or back at Burnley if Nick Pope was to move on.
"What an opportunity that would be, to return to Burnley and end his career at a club where he is held in such high regard.
"It is a big summer for Nick Pope and Burnley could do at lot worse than going back for Tom Heaton. He is a phenomenal goalkeeper and I could see that happening if a Pope was allowed to leave. The best signing Burnley could make in that situation would be Heaton.
"He is far too good for the Championship though. I certainly would not be thinking that he would drop down a league and it does not look like West Brom will be able to get out."
