Alan Hutton has claimed Celtic are "desperate" for new signings after Carl Starfelt was thrown into the starting XI against Hearts.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland international admitted Ange Postecoglou's decision had not fixed the problems in defence.

Starfelt was handed his Celtic debut on Saturday against Hearts, just days after joining training.

However, the 26-year-old was unable to prevent the Bhoys from slipping to a 2-1 defeat to the newly-promoted side.

The Swedish centre-back was paired alongside Nir Bitton at the heart of the defence.

Hutton admitted it was always going to be a baptism of fire for Starfelt at Tynecastle.

However, he insisted the new addition had not done much to help solve Celtic's woes.

Hutton told Football Insider's Russell Edge: "Hearts is a very tough place to go. A very, very tough place to go. Their confidence is in a good place.

"It shows you where Celtic are that Starfelt was flung into the equation after just walking through the door.

"How desperate they were for reinforcements. It was always going to be a difficult night.

"Defensively they still looked quite weak, losing from a set-piece.

"Starfelt worked his way into the game but got caught for the first goal with a slack tackle."

Starfelt played 42 times across all competitions for Rubin Kazan before joining Celtic.

He could make his second appearance in the Europa League qualifier against Jablonec on Thursday.
