Celtic and Rangers have deployed their top scouts to watch over the Under-17 European Championship in Croatia, according to a report.

The Daily Record claims that both of the Glasgow heavyweights are keeping tabs on Europe’s hottest up-and-coming talent at the annual youth tournament.

Scotland got their Group B campaign off to a flyer with a win and a draw against Faroe Islands and Hungary and currently top their pool, which also contains France.

Celtic’s Jack Aitchison found the net in the 2-0 victory over the Faroe Islands while Gers striker Zak Rudden scored the equaliser against a Hungarian side that had not long beaten the French.

It is understood that the Old Firm scouts are joined by the recruitment experts of clubs across England, Italy, Spain and Germany, and the Hoops have understandably send their top man on the case.

It is not clear who exactly the transfer gurus are keeping an eye on in Croatia, but a number of top teams have their youth side in the tournament including Spain, Germany, England and the Netherlands.

The Republic of Ireland are also in the Balkans, but lost their opening tie with Serbia while England began their campaign with a 3-1 win over Norway.

Celtic can afford to take the time out to try and invest in their youth side, but Rangers have to invest in first-team players at the moment, and must rely on their own academy to produce talent. Rangers need cheap, quality players and to do that they need to unearth them where no one else can find them. A more long-term plan is obviously a good thing but for Caixinha, the priority for this summer is clear. His squad needs a serious overhaul and that means experience – which will come from the other end of the age spectrum.
