Paul Mitchell is interested in becoming the new Rangers director of football, according to a report.

Sky Sports claim on their website that the recruitment expert is a contender for the vacant position, which has been created by Ibrox chiefs as part of a major overhaul of the club's management structure.

It is said that Mitchell "would consider the role" as he casts his eye at new job opportunities after leaving Tottenham.

It has been widely reported in the last 48 hours that Rangers have turned their attention to Mitchell, 35, after being rebuffed by No1 target Ross Wilson.

The Southampton head of recruitment and scouting has snubbed the chance to return to his native Scotland in favour of remaining in the Premier League.

Mitchell is available after handing in his lengthy notice at Tottenham last August to signal the beginning of the end of his time at the club he joined from Southampton in 2014.

Sky Sports report that Mitchell left White Hart Lane two weeks ago after being placed on gardening leave by the club.

He is free to take on other opportunities and his timing could be good given that Rangers are revamping their technical staff in the wake of the departures in acrimonious circumstances of Mark Warburton, David Weir and Frank McParland.

Portugese Pedro Caixinha is the hot favourite to become the new manager amid reports he is in advanced talks to succeed Warburton.
