Martin Tyler has predicted that Newcastle will avoid relegation in their return to the Premier League.

The Sky Sports commentator believes that the Magpies still have to remain realistic in their targets next season, despite Rafa Benitez being expected to make dramatic changes to his squad over the summer.

Owner Mike Ashley has recently offered the Spaniard his full financial backing for the upcoming transfer window as he looks to ensure that Newcastle do not suffer a third relegation of his reign.

Tyler, 71, did a question and answer session on Sky Sports Football’s official Twitter account on Friday when he was asked how he thinks the Tynesiders will fare over the course of the next year.

He replied: “Staying up will be the first priority and I would expect them to do that.”

Benitez’s men ensured that they would go back to the Premier League as title winners in a final day of the Championship season which will full of drama.

Brighton had to equal or better Newcastle’s result to earn the crown, but a late Jack Grealish goal meant they could only draw at Aston Villa while the Magpies thrashed Barnsley.

Newcastle will be the only representatives of the North-East of England in the 2017/18 top-flight season as their fierce rivals Sunderland, along with Middlesbrough and Hull, have all had their relegations confirmed.

Brighton will join the Magpies in the big-time while Huddersfield and Reading will clash in the play-off final later this month.
