Aston Villa are plotting a sensational January move for Roma forward Tammy Abraham, sources have told Football Insider.

A return to Villa Park for the 26-year-old is now on the cards either in the winter window or next summer, more than five years after he arrived at the Midlands giants on loan from Chelsea.

Unai Emery's side are planning to sign a striker in the January window and Abraham is on their target list.

The England international is currently recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament tear that has sidelined him since June - and is not expected to return until the spring of 2024.

Nevertheless, it is believed Villa see him as a top-class forward who can slot into Emery's system.

This development comes after Football Insider revealed (14 November) that Jhon Duran could leave Villa on loan in January.

A well-placed source has revealed that Duran is a “handful” for Emery and his staff behind the scenes - and his attitude has been questioned by the manager on multiple occasions at the club’s Bodymoor Heath training ground.

Villa could now sensationally replace him with Abraham - who fired the club to promotion while on loan in the 2018-19 season.

He played 40 times for the Midlands giants in the Championship, notching 26 goals and three assists.

The England international has since won the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League during his time with Chelsea and Roma.

He joined the Italian giants from the Londoners in 2021 for a reported fee of £34million and is under contract until June 2026.

Emery's undisputed first-choice striker is Ollie Watkins, who has notched 11 goals and five assists in 19 games in all competitions this season.

Villa sit fifth in the Premier League after 12 games and are just three points adrift of league leaders Man City.
