Charlton midfielder Ben Dempsey has agreed to join Scottish Championship side Ayr United, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old has spent the past few seasons out on loan and Charlton are ready to loan him out again this month.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Ayr have now reached an agreement with Charlton over taking Dempsey for the rest of the season.

The midfielder has made four appearances for the Addicks in the EFL Trophy this season.

Dempsey spent last season out on loan at non-league Woking, playing 26 times during his time at the Kingfield Stadium.

The academy product was offered a new contract at the Valley following his return to the south London club last summer (2021).

Dempsey signed his first professional deal in 2018 but has made just three league starts for the club - all coming in the Championship in the 2019/20 campaign.

In addition to his Woking spell, the Tooting-born midfielder has also enjoyed short-term spells at Kingstonian and Dulwich Hamlet.

Charlton sit comfortably mid-table in England's third tier.

Dempsey has been unable to usurp first-choice options Elliot Lee and Alex Gilbey in the Addicks' midfield.

The midfielder has not been named on the bench in League One this term.

Struggling Scottish Championship side Ayr United are looking to Dempsey in an attempt to stave off the threat of relegation.

The Honest Men are just three points clear of bottom side Dunfermline after 21 games.

Lee Bullen's side face top-flight St Mirren in the Scottish Cup today.
