Tottenham are going cool on appointing Roberto Martinez as their new manager after holding talks, Football Insider can reveal.

This site revealed on Monday the 47-year-old is making a "huge play" for the vacant post behind the scenes and is willing to quit Belgium after this summer's European Championships to take over.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider the club have held extensive discussions with Martinez and his camp as they search for a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho.

The Londoners are said to have been impressed by the Spaniard's enthusiasm for the post and his plans for improving the team.

But they are not convinced Martinez is the right man for the job and he is not currently seen as a favourite for it.

The style of play he would implement would draw favour with Tottenham fans but the doubts stem from his mixed record at former club Everton, where the team struggled to match his big promises.

Martinez's recruitment at his former teams, including Wigan Athletic and Swansea City, also does not stand up to intensive scrutiny.

Sources have said that longstanding Everton chairman Bill Kenwright privately dubbed the Spaniard "007" for being a "clever mover" behind the scenes.

He is regarded as handling a 'Golden Generation' of Belgium players adeptly and steered them to a best-ever finish of third place at the 2018 World Cup.

But Martinez fears the squad has peaked and he is keen to return to the Premier League after five years in charge of the national team.
