Burnley have opened talks over signing Man City star James Trafford, sources have told Football Insider.

Vincent Kompany is a big admirer of the goalkeeper, 20, due to his City connections and watched him in action for loan club Bolton during their playoff semi-final against Barnsley on 13 May.

Sources with knowledge of the situation have told Football Insider that the Clarets boss believes Trafford could be an excellent addition to his squad for their return to the Premier League next season.

Burnley are working on a deal to sign Trafford, who is valued around £20million, on a permanent deal.

The youngster was one of the best goalkeepers in League One while at Bolton last season and also helped them win the EFL Trophy.

Although Trafford is valued at £20m, it is believed £15m could be enough to get a deal done.

The shot-stopper made 52 appearances for Bolton whilst on loan at the League One club and was in the starting lineup for all of those outings.

Trafford kept 26 clean sheets this season and only conceded 38 goals across all competitions.

Burnley's current choices between the sticks are fellow former Cityzen Arijanet Muric who joined from the Etihad last summer on a four-year deal having spent most of his City career on loan.

Back up keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell made 16 appearances for Kompany's side this season and is entering the final year of his deal at Turf Moor.

Burnely are looking for reinforcements this summer as boss Kompany prepares for his first crack at the Premier League as a manager and will welcome his former club to Turf Moor for their first game of the season.
