Celtic scouts are compiling a dossier on Dundee United centre-forward Lawrence Shankland ahead of January, Football Insider understands.

The Scottish giants are keeping close tabs on the newly-capped Scotland international, who has scored at better than a goal a game this season.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider the club are making regular checks on the Dundee United goal machine, 24, as they assess whether he is capable of making a big impact in the Scottish Premiership.

Football Insider revealed in September that Rangers are also hot on the trail of Shankland.

Dundee United face a major battle to hang on to their prize asset in the January window.

He has a contract that runs until the summer of 2022 and is now valued well in excess of £1million.

Celtic are in the market for a new striker who can take some of the scoring burden off main man Odsonne Edouard, whose deputy Leigh Griffiths hasn't kicked a ball since the 3-1 win over Hearts back on 25 August.

Amid concern as to whether Griffiths can ever reach his former heights again, Shankland is among the front men on the radar of the triple treble winners.

He marked his second Scotland appearance with a goal in the last international break after his stunning early-season scoring exploits at Dundee United.

Shankland has scored 18 club goals this season, including an extraordinary 16 from just 12 league matches.

He moved to Dundee United on a free in the summer after spearheading Ayr United's promotion campaign, netting 61 times in 73 matches for the Ayrshire club.

He has a contract with the second-tier club that runs until the summer of 2022.
