Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and Oxford United are chasing Cambridge midfielder Paul Digby, Football Insider can reveal.

He is out of contract next month and has rejected two offers of a new deal.

A source has told Football Insider the League One trio are keeping close tabs on Digby and Charlton are currently the frontrunners to sign him on a free.

The defensive midfielder was outstanding as Cambridge won promotion from League Two.

His data was among the best for players in his position in League Two this season.

The 26-year-old played 41 times across all competitions, including 35 League Two appearances.

Cambridge finished second in the division with the fourth-best defence as they conceded just 49 goals.

Charlton Athletic, Sunderland and Oxford United will all be aiming to earn promotion from League One next season.

Sunderland and Oxford were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Lincoln City and Blackpool respectively who will now each other in the final this weekend.

The Black Cats have three central midfielders out of contract next month and will have to add some strength in depth this summer.

Charlton missed out on a place in the play-offs on goal difference after failing to win in three of their last five games.

Manager Nigel Adkins will be without Jake Foster-Caskey for a significant period of next season after he suffered an ACL injury earlier this month.

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Darren Pratley is set to leave the club.
