Crystal Palace have been beaten by Getafe in the race to sign Real Madrid striker Borja Mayoral, Football Insider understands.

The 24-year-old is currently at Roma after joining on a two-year loan from Madrid in 2020.

However, Mayoral has struggled for game time under Jose Mourinho and Palace have shown interest in signing him this month to bolster their attacking options.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the London club are set to lose out on capturing the forward as he has his heart set on a switch to Getafe and a move back to Spain.

The La Liga side are confident of wrapping up a deal after a breakthrough in talks.

It would see the striker return to his native Spain, where he has played for Real Madrid and Levante.

Mayoral's contract with his parent club expires in the summer of 2023.

The former Spain under-21 international has scored seven goals in 33 appearances for Los Blancos.

In his 15 month spell at AS Roma, he has contributed 18 goals and eight assists.

Palace are keen to add more firepower to their squad in the January window.

Patrick Vieira currently has Christian Benteke, Odsonne Edouard, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew at his disposal.

However, none of the aforementioned strikers have scored consistently for the Eagles this season.

Crystal Palace are 12th in the Premier League table - 12 points above the relegation zone.
