Liverpool are planning to informally approach Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, sources have told Football Insider.

Liverpool have many other sporting directors on their radar ahead of a pivotal few months but Rolfes is highly regarded for his role in transforming Leverkusen into the best team in Germany.

The Merseysiders are now ready to approach Rolfes, 42, via third parties to ascertain his interest in taking the now-vacant role.

Old transfer chief Jorg Schmadtke left Liverpool at the end of the January transfer window after joining last June.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Reds plan to appoint a sporting director before making a final decision on installing a new manager.

Liverpool to seal stunning double swoop for Bayer Leverkusen's Rolfes and Alonso?

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the season despite having a contract running until June 2026.

Ex-Leverkusen and Germany midfielder Rolfes was appointed in a backroom role at the North Rhine-Westphalia club in 2018 and has earned a reputation as one of Europe's most shrewd operators.

He recently put pen to paper on a new contract, keeping him with Leverkusen until June 2028.

Rolfes has been credited with signing the likes of Victor Boniface, Alex Grimaldo, Jeremie Frimpong and Piero Hincapie for the Bundesliga leaders.

Alonso's side - who are unbeaten in the 2023-24 campaign - sit eight points ahead of Bayern Munich in second.
