Notts County boss Luke Williams is in advanced talks to become the new manager of Oxford United, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed a deal is close to being agreed following new discussions in the last 24 hours.

Williams has been targetted by the U's following the departure of Liam Manning - who left the club for Bristol City last week.

Manning had only been at the Kassam Stadium since March and led Oxford to second place in League One.

But he chose to succeed Nigel Pearson at Bristol City, signing a four-year deal at Ashton Gate and taking assistant Chris Hogg with him.

Oxford have been under the interim management of Craig Short - who has picked up two wins in a week since Manning's departure.

The U's have also been widely linked with a move for ex-Chelsea and Everton boss Frank Lampard, but it is Williams who is now moving closer to landing the role.

The 42-year-old, who previously managed Oxford's rivals Swindon, currently has Notts County sitting fifth in League Two.

He achieved promotion from the National League at the first time of asking following his appointment in June 2022.

Williams led the Magpies to a second-place finish in the fifth tier, behind Wrexham, but managed to win the playoffs to return the Meadow Lane club to the EFL.

Oxford

Oxford sit second in League One, just one point behind league leaders Portsmouth after 16 games.

The U's are next in action against Cheltenham on 25 November.
