Callum Wilson is confident he will be fit to make his Newcastle United comeback in their next match against Tottenham, Football Insider can reveal.

The striker has been sidelined since 28 August with a hamstring injury and his absence has coincided with a four-match winless run in the Premier League.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider today that Wilson, 29, is increasingly upbeat about being ready immediately after the international break.

It would be a huge boost to the Magpies if their main striker is available to return in the match at St James' Park on Sunday week.

Wilson is Newcastle's joint-leading scorer this season with two goals from three matches this season and has a fine record for the club.

He had banged in 14 goals, as well as supplied five assists, from 31 appearances since signing from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020.

During the four league games Wilson has missed, Newcastle have not won although they have managed to score one goal in each of those matches.

Former England striker Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider it will make a big difference to Newcastle to have their number one forward back in action.

Phillips told Football Insider's Dylan Childs: "That's a massive boost.

"Newcastle have missed Wilson hugely. When he plays, he guarantees you goals, guarantees you a threat.

"That's what Newcastle have lacked. It's brilliant news for him to be back in training.

"I'm sure they can't wait for him to get out there and get going again."

Newcastle are a club in crisis once again after heading into the international break 19th in the table with three points.
