Jorge Mendes is sensationally plotting to transfer Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo to Aston Villa, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The world's most powerful agent believes the Portugese coach may be ready to move on from Molineux next season.

A well-placed Wolves source has told Football Insider that Mendes is keen for Nuno to take over at a club with greater financial resources and ambition.

Villa are regarded as a strong option for the 47-year-old, who has overseen the most successful period in Wolves' modern history.

Dean Smith's long-term position at Villa Park is not believed to be secure and the billionaire owners Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris have huge ambition as well as deep pockets.

Mendes has a reputation for being one step ahead of everyone else and has a remarkable track record of securing the best deal and move for his clients.

The Portugese well knows that the cash well is starting to run dry at Wolves and there will not be the same major transfer spend in the upcoming window.

It would certainly be a sensational move were Mendes to take Nuno to Villa given the rivalry between the Midlands big hitters.

There is the growing sense that the time has come for Nuno to move on after four years in charge.

Since taking over in May 2017, he has catapulted Wolves from the middle of the Championship and into Europe via successive Premier League seventh-place finishes.

Aston Villa

Progress has stalled this season in 12th amid long-term injuries to key men like Raul Jimenez and Jonny.

Nuno has been linked with the vacant Tottenham job but he is not believed to currently be a leading contender for the role.
