Sources: Mourinho can't believe Tottenham sold Trippier for such a low fee
Jose Mourinho and his staff are baffled that Tottenham sold Kieran Trippier for such a low fee two years ago, Football Insider has learned.
The right-back, 30, was lured to Atletico Madrid in July 2019 for £21.7million according to Sky Sports.
A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Mourinho and his coaches believe Trippier is far superior to the team's current senior right-backs Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty.
It is said to be a "bone of contention" that Trippier was, firstly, sold in the first place and, secondly, let go at his peak for what was a relatively low fee.
The transfer market was still buoyant in July 2019 when the England defender left.
He had three years left on his Spurs contract at the time, was a regular for the national team and had a standout 2018 World Cup.
Trippier's final campaign at Spurs was underwhelming and he had been strongly criticised by supporters for some major errors in defence.
But there had still been an expectation the player would only be sold for £30m-plus and possibly as high as £40m.
Trippier subsequently told The Beautiful Game Podcast how Daniel Levy and former manager Mauricio Pochettino gave him the cold shoulder before his transfer.
The defender revealed the club tried to offload him to various clubs prior to his move to Atletico and heard from "people I trust" they tried to do so in the "March/April" of his final season.
Trippier has performed impressively during his two seasons at Atletico and was recalled by Diego Simeone as soon as his betting ban ended.
He was also named as one of three right-backs in the England squad on Thursday, along with Reece James and another ex-Spur Kyle Walker.
Meanwhile, the futures of both Aurier and Doherty are up in the air going into the summer window.
Tottenham are keen to offload the Ivorian, who enters the final year of his contract in July.
