Ruben Neves plans to leave Al-Hilal next summer and could return to the Premier League with both Newcastle and Man City interested in the midfielder, sources have told Football Insider.

As has been widely reported, the 26-year-old is not expecting to leave the Saudi Pro League outfit mid-season - just months after completing a reported £47million move from Wolves.

That is despite Premier League clubs voting on Tuesday against a ban on associated-party loan deals for the January window - which allows Newcastle to sign the Portugal international from Al-Hilal temporarily.

Seven clubs, including the Saudi-owned Magpies, voted against putting restrictions in place at the top-flight's shareholder meeting on Tuesday (21 November).

Nevertheless, both Newcastle and Man City are believed to be unlikely to move for Neves in January.

However, their interest remains concrete and active, sources say, with the 26-year-old intending on a swift Saudi exit.

As such, he is keen on an exit at the end of the 2023-24 campaign - opening the door for Newcastle and Man City to make their move.

A well-placed source told Football Insider that City boss Pep Guardiola is a huge fan of the midfielder and believes he fits the profile needed for the treble-winners going forward.

Man City

Meanwhile, Newcastle are long-term admirers of Neves - who remains a regular Portugal international despite his Saudi move.

He has made 17 club appearances across all competitions this term, notching two goals and one assist.
