Newcastle United are readying a move for free agent David De Gea after Nick Pope suffered a devastating blow that could sideline him until April, sources have told Football Insider.
De Gea, 33, has been without a club since leaving Man United when his contract expired at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.
Newcastle fear that Nick Pope could be sidelined long-term after he picked up an injury in the 1-0 win over United at St James' Park on Saturday (2 December).

Pope has been the first-choice keeper for Eddie Howe this term and had played every minute of Premier League and Champions League football in the 2023-24 campaign until his injury.
He has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season, conceding 19 goals and keeping eight clean sheets.
Martin Dubravka, who came off the bench to maintain the clean sheet against Man United, is now expected to act as the stand-in goalkeeper.
But Newcastle are weighing up a potential swoop for De Gea amid several other key injuries in Howe's squad.
The ex-Spain international won the Premier League's Golden Glove award last season but nonetheless was allowed to leave Man United.
He has racked up 415 total appearances in the English top flight, conceding 446 goals and keeping 148 clean sheets.
De Gea earned a reported wage of £375,000-a-week on his last Man United contract but agreed a pay cut to remain at the club before that deal was withdrawn.
