Bolton Wanderers have made an approach to sign Leeds United defender Conor Shaughnessy on loan, Football Insider understands.

The cash-strapped League One outfit are keen to push through a deal for the Republic of Ireland Under-21 international when they have completed their protracted takeover.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Bolton have registered their interest in Shaughnessy as they look to beat other lower league sides to his signature.

Marcelo Bielsa has decided that Shaughnessy can go out on loan again this season after spending the second half of the last campaign out at SPL side Hearts.

League One, League Two and Scottish clubs are able to sign players up until the end of August after the window for Championship and Premier League clubs to bring in new recruits closed on Thursday.

Shaughnessy broke into the Leeds side when Thomas Christiansen was manager in the first half of the 2017-18 campaign.

He made 14 appearances under Christiansen and was rewarded with a new contract in September 2017 tying him to Elland Road until the summer of 2021.

Shaughnessy has yet to play for Leeds since Bielsa took over in the summer of 2018.
